Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
The 28-year-old left-arm spinner, who was Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the 2-0 series victory, delivered an impressive performance throughout the series. Despite his stellar showing, concerns about his bowling action emerged after the match.
ICC Assessment Awaited
Kuhnemann will now undergo a formal assessment to determine the legality of his action. If his bowling action is found illegal, he will face suspension from international cricket until the issue is resolved and he clears a reassessment.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Cricket Australia confirmed the development:
“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter.”
The statement also highlighted that this is the first time Kuhnemann’s action has been questioned in his eight years of professional cricket. Cricket Australia plans to work closely with the ICC and independent experts in accordance with ICC regulations.
Domestic Cricket Participation
While barred from international cricket for the time being, Kuhnemann remains eligible to play and bowl in domestic competitions for Tasmania.
The spinner expressed gratitude for the support from his team and fans, recently posting on Instagram to share his thoughts on the series and the challenges ahead.
As he prepares for the next steps, Kuhnemann joins a list of cricketers who have had their bowling actions questioned but successfully returned after modifications.
