Government Issues New Guidelines to Prevent the Spread of Monkeypox at Airports

In response to the growing global concerns about the spread of the monkeypox virus, the government of Pakistan has issued new guidelines to airports across the country, following the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. These measures aim to strengthen screening and preventive protocols at all entry points to safeguard public health.

Strengthened Screening Measures at Entry Points

According to the Border Health Services, the new guidelines are designed to enhance the screening process at all airports. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been granted the authority to halt the issuance of visas on arrival to any foreign nationals unless they pass a health clearance focused on detecting symptoms of monkeypox. This measure ensures that no potential carriers of the virus can enter the country.

The FIA’s Immigration department has also been instructed to provide comprehensive information about arriving passengers to health authorities. This data will enable continuous monitoring and prompt action if any symptoms of monkeypox are detected.

Implementation of SOPs by CAA and Airlines

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has been directed to enforce all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to passengers and flights to prevent the spread of monkeypox at airports. The CAA, airlines, airport staff, and ground handling agencies are required to strictly adhere to these SOPs, ensuring no lapses in the implementation of safety precautions.

Mandatory Screening for Passengers and Flight Crews

The Border Health Services will manage the screening of passengers for monkeypox symptoms. In cases where symptoms are detected, the affected individuals will be isolated as necessary. The guidelines also mandate that all flight crews arriving in Pakistan from international destinations undergo screening for monkeypox symptoms.

These measures reflect the government’s proactive approach to preventing the spread of monkeypox within Pakistan, aiming to protect both citizens and international travelers from the virus.
