Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024, following a sensational year where he topped the wicket-taking charts in Test cricket. Despite recovering from a back injury and being on the losing side in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah’s remarkable performances have earned him the prestigious accolade.
Outstanding 2024 Performance
The 31-year-old Indian pacer finished with 71 wickets from 13 matches, 19 more than the second-placed Gus Atkinson of England. His performance included a stunning 32 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at an average of 13.06, which led to him winning the Player of the Series award.
Bumrah’s average across the year was an impressive 14.92, and he ended 2024 with an annual strike rate of just 30.1, making him the most efficient bowler in the calendar year. According to the ICC, Bumrah’s performance is unprecedented:
“Across Test history, none of the 17 bowlers to have taken 70+ wickets in a calendar year did so at an average as low as Bumrah’s.”
Recognition and Praise
The Indian pacer beat England’s Harry Brook and Joe Root, along with Kamindu Mendis of Sri Lanka, to win the award. The last Indian cricketer to receive the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year was Virat Kohli in 2018.
Expressing his gratitude, Bumrah said:
“I am deeply honoured to receive the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award. Test cricket has always been a format I hold close to my heart, and to be recognised on this platform is truly special.”
Bumrah also acknowledged the role of his teammates, coaches, and fans in his success:
“This award is not just a reflection of my individual efforts but also of the unwavering support of my teammates, coaches, and fans who continue to believe and inspire me every day.”
Legacy and Future
With this victory, Bumrah cements his place as one of the finest fast bowlers in the world and a key player in India’s cricketing future. His recognition for 2024 is a testament to his resilience and exceptional talent.
