Sarfaraz Ahmed Hopes for Another Epic India-Pakistan Final in Champions Trophy 2025
Former Pakistan captain and swing legend Sarfaraz Ahmed has recently shared his heartfelt wish for fans worldwide to witness another electrifying India-Pakistan final in the forthcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Speaking to Telecomasia.net, Sarfaraz, who led Pakistan to a historic victory in 2017, emphasized that such a final would be the biggest match in recent years and a dream come true for cricket fans.
“Another India-Pakistan final in the coming Champions Trophy would be a dream one and fans around the world will die over it,” Sarfaraz declared.
“It would be a double joy for the fans in Pakistan if it could be staged in Lahore because our people also want to see Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Pant, and Bumrah playing on their grounds.”
Reflecting on the 2017 Champions Trophy
The 2017 Champions Trophy in the UK remains etched in cricketing history, not only for the nail-biting encounters but also for marking Sarfaraz’s debut as captain in an India clash. Despite facing a heavy 124-run defeat to India in his early days as skipper—a result he describes as a “nightmare”—Sarfaraz recalls that the loss became a turning point. The experience led to hard discussions and renewed determination to lift the trophy.
He reminisced about the quarter-final clash against Sri Lanka in Cardiff, where, in a crucial 8th wicket stand of 75 runs with Mohammad Amir, he credited Amir’s heroics for inspiring him and changing the team’s fortunes. This partnership was pivotal in propelling Pakistan past the semi-finals, setting up a dream final against India at The Oval.
The 2017 Triumph and Its Legacy
Sarfaraz fondly recalls the final, describing it as the best day of his life. He detailed how Fakhar Zaman played an extraordinary innings, even getting a reprieve from a no-ball off Jasprit Bumrah. Pakistan posted a formidable total of 338-4, and Mohammad Amir’s sensational bowling spell—claiming wickets of Rohit, Kohli, and Dhawan—broke the back of India’s batting lineup.
He vividly remembers the moment when Azhar Ali dropped Kohli off Amir’s delivery, a turning point that lifted the team’s spirits. The final catch he took, which sealed the win, still gives him goosebumps, and he recalled the massive celebration that ensued upon returning home.
“We were aspiring to wear the white coat and on June 18, 2017, we wore that. It was the most memorable day of my life. When we returned home, the whole of Pakistan celebrated the win. It took me several hours to reach my home from the airport because of the crowd.”
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Sarfaraz Ahmed is optimistic about the possibility of another India-Pakistan final. He believes that the current crop of players on both sides—boasting star power with names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and emerging talents—will make the final an unforgettable spectacle.
His vision not only reflects his passion for the sport but also highlights the enduring rivalry that continues to captivate fans worldwide. As Pakistan and India prepare for future clashes, Sarfaraz’s words serve as a reminder of cricket’s ability to inspire and unite millions.
