Marcus Stoinis Announces ODI Retirement, Impacting Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 Plans
Australia’s ace all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has officially announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, confirming that he will not feature in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 35-year-old, who was initially named in the Australia squad for the tournament, made the difficult decision to step away from the 50-over format in order to focus on the next phase of his career.
Stoinis, a key member of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad, played a pivotal role in the team’s dramatic comeback against Pakistan during the tournament. His contributions with the ball helped Australia recover from a tough start and eventually clinch the World Cup title. However, after the World Cup, Stoinis featured in only one more ODI – against Pakistan earlier this season – as his form and fitness came into question.
Following media reports that the right-arm pacer had reached the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for scans on his injured back, the BCCI made an important announcement regarding his status. According to chairman of the men’s senior selection committee Ajit Agarkar, Bumrah has been advised to off-load for five weeks, confirming that Stoinis will not be available for the upcoming series. Although Stoinis remains part of the Champions Trophy squad, there are rising doubts about his participation, with Harshit Rana being considered as a potential replacement if his recovery does not progress.
Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald praised Stoinis for his decade-long contribution to the ODI setup. McDonald stated,
“Stoinis has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. Not only has he been an invaluable player, but also an incredible person to have in the group. He is a natural leader, an exceptionally popular player, and a great person. He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements.”
With Stoinis’ retirement now confirmed, Australia faces the challenge of reshaping its ODI squad ahead of the Champions Trophy. In addition to Stoinis, several other key players are on the comeback trail due to injuries—Mitchell Marsh has already been ruled out with a back injury, while both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are considered doubtful for the tournament.
As Australia prepares for the upcoming international schedule, the retirement of Marcus Stoinis marks a significant turning point for the team. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how Cricket Australia adjusts its plans and which emerging talents step up to fill the void left by one of their most dynamic all-rounders.
