Mike Hesson in Line to Coach Pakistan as NBS Faces Major Renovation
In a pivotal moment for Pakistan cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly in advanced talks with Mike Hesson, the former head coach of New Zealand, to take over the reins of the national men’s team. If finalized, Hesson would succeed Aqib Javed, the current interim white-ball coach.
Hesson, who is currently coaching Islamabad United in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), is widely recognized for his analytical approach and calm demeanor—attributes that earned him success during his tenure with New Zealand from 2012 to 2018. He also brings with him IPL experience, further strengthening his credentials for a high-pressure role like Pakistan’s head coach.
Although the PCB had earlier approached Hesson last year, he declined due to prior commitments. However, recent developments suggest renewed interest and more promising discussions. The board is prioritizing foreign candidates due to a limited domestic pool, with a Level Three coaching certification being the minimum eligibility requirement. Applications for the role close on May 4.
While former Pakistan coach Saqlain Mushtaq was considered, Hesson has emerged as the frontrunner in a coaching setup that has seen significant volatility over the past year. Former Test coach Jason Gillespie resigned in December, and white-ball coach Gary Kirsten departed just six months into his term, citing internal issues and clashes with PCB management.
Aqib Javed, who was initially appointed for a short-term stint, has since overseen Pakistan’s white-ball tour of New Zealand and now awaits clarity on his future role.
National Bank Stadium Set for Major Overhaul
Parallel to the coaching shake-up, the PCB is preparing to launch the second phase of renovation at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium (NBS) immediately after the conclusion of PSL Season 10.
The decision comes after dismal crowd turnouts during PSL matches in Karachi, with outdated facilities and poor fan experiences cited as key reasons. The upcoming renovation will address these concerns through a comprehensive redesign of the stadium’s seating, entry/exit points, and parking facilities.
The goal is to elevate the infrastructure to international standards, creating a more welcoming and functional environment for both domestic and global events. A complete re-profiling of the stands will focus on comfort, better sightlines, and improved aesthetics, giving the stadium a modern look while preserving its historic essence.
While an official timeline has not yet been announced, sources indicate that redevelopment work will begin swiftly post-PSL, signaling a serious commitment by the PCB to reinvigorate fan engagement in one of the country’s most iconic cricket venues.
