In a candid conversation with journalist Saleem Khaliq, Shaheen Afridi has finally broken his silence over his abrupt removal as Pakistan’s T20I captain, just six months after his appointment.
The young pacer was appointed skipper after Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup, where Babar Azam’s leadership came under heavy scrutiny. Shaheen captained the side in a five-match T20I series against New Zealand in early 2024. But before he could lead the team into the T20 World Cup 2024, the decision was reversed — and Babar Azam was reappointed as captain.
“I Don’t Have a Heart These Days”
Known for his sense of humour, Shaheen responded to Khaliq’s question about how the demotion impacted him emotionally with a cheeky remark:
“I don’t have a heart these days,”
eliciting laughter from both sides.
A Moment of Pride
Behind the wit, however, was a man who cherished every moment in charge.
“I am happy that I was the captain of Pakistan. It was a proud moment,” said Shaheen.
“You feel proud that you have done something for Pakistan. I am always happy when someone wins the match for Pakistan.”
His words showcased his team-first mindset, as he praised individual performances across the squad, regardless of who took center stage.
Leadership Rollercoaster
Shaheen’s removal came just before the T20 World Cup 2024, where Pakistan once again stumbled. Under Babar Azam’s reinstated leadership, the team faced shock defeats to the USA and India, crashing out in the group stage with only one win from three games.
While many fans and analysts were divided over the captaincy shuffle, Afridi’s gracious and composed response highlights the maturity and humility that defines his character—on and off the field.
