Shoaib Malik Defends Dual Role at 43 Amid PSL 10 Criticism
Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has responded to mounting criticism over his participation in the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, asserting that his age and dual responsibilities do not hinder his contribution to the game.
At 43, Malik is representing the Quetta Gladiators as both a player and mentor — a decision that has sparked debate among fans and former cricketers. Critics argue that he should step back from playing and focus entirely on mentoring younger talent. Malik, however, remains unfazed.
Speaking to the media, the seasoned cricketer made it clear that his primary job, like every other squad member, is to perform when given the opportunity. “The think tank’s job is to make strategies. Our job is to perform when given the chance,” he stated. “We are working hard to fix past mistakes and deliver better results going forward.”
Malik also addressed the structure of his contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), clarifying that he is not breaching any boundaries by playing. “I always try to fulfil my responsibilities as a mentor when needed. My contract clearly states that I am eligible to play and I am doing that,” he affirmed.
The veteran further questioned the double standards in Pakistan’s cricketing circles, saying, “People often question why I am still playing, but no one asks about the current Pakistan players sitting outside the PSL entirely.”
Although Malik has had a slow start to the season — scoring just 14 runs across two matches — he remains committed to supporting his team both on and off the field.
His comments arrive at a time when Pakistan cricket is navigating a critical phase, seeking the right balance between experience and fresh talent. With the national team under pressure following inconsistent performances, voices like Malik’s highlight the ongoing tug-of-war between tradition and transition in Pakistani cricket.
For now, Shoaib Malik stands firm: he will continue to play as long as his team believes in his ability.
