South Africa Sets 316-Run Target for Afghanistan in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Opener

South Africa has posted a formidable total of 315/6 in 50 overs after opting to bat first against Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group B opener at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi.

Aiden Markram played a crucial role in the final overs, remaining unbeaten on 52 off 36 balls, while Wiaan Mulder added a quick 12* off 6 balls to push the total past 300. Rassie van der Dussen also contributed significantly with a well-compiled 52 off 46 deliveries.

Ryan Rickelton laid a strong foundation for the Proteas, scoring a brilliant 103 off 106 balls before being run out in the 35th over. Captain Temba Bavuma also played a key role with a composed 58. The team maintained a steady run rate throughout the innings, setting up a strong position for their bowlers to defend.

Afghanistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the South African batters, with Mohammad Nabi (2/48) proving to be the pick of the bowlers. Rashid Khan remained economical but went wicketless, while Noor Ahmad conceded 65 runs in 9 overs, taking the crucial wicket of van der Dussen.

As Afghanistan prepares for a challenging chase under the Karachi lights, the pitch conditions could play a role in the second innings. The National Bank Stadium has traditionally favored batters early on but tends to slow down later, making stroke play difficult. With dew expected to have minimal impact, spinners may come into play in the latter stages of the innings.

Afghanistan, having won two out of their previous five ODIs against South Africa, will be eager to put up a strong fight. However, with South Africa determined to overcome their ICC tournament struggles, the chase promises to be an exciting contest.
