Wasim Akram Questions Faheem Ashraf’s Selection for ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Former Pakistan captain and swing legend Wasim Akram has expressed serious concerns over Faheem Ashraf’s inclusion in Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, calling it an unexpected decision.
During a franchise press conference, Akram pointed out Ashraf’s underwhelming performances in recent matches.
“His performance in the first 20 matches was below par—he has a bowling average of 100 and a batting average of just 9. I don’t understand the logic behind his selection. What else can I say now?” Akram remarked.
Concerns Over Pakistan’s Squad Selection
Akram is not alone in questioning the selectors’ choices. Other former cricketers, including Tanveer Ahmed, Kamran Akmal, and Basit Ali, have criticized the returns of Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah, while advocating for the inclusion of young talents like Sufyan Maqeem and Aamer Jamal.
Additionally, Akram raised concerns about Pakistan’s spin department, noting that while most teams are opting for more spinners due to subcontinent conditions, Pakistan has only selected Abrar Ahmed as a specialist spinner.
Former captain Rashid Latif also slammed the selection committee, calling their approach incomplete and questioning the absence of Saim Ayub, a key player in Pakistan’s recent ODI victories.
“Pakistan lacks a solid opener despite Fakhar Zaman’s return. His partner could be either Saud Shakeel or Babar Azam, but it’s not an ideal solution,” Latif added.
Faheem Ashraf & Khushdil Shah’s Limited Impact
🔹 Faheem Ashraf last played an ODI against India on September 11, 2023, during the Asia Cup, where Pakistan had a disappointing campaign.
🔹 Khushdil Shah last appeared for Pakistan on October 7, 2023, and has since struggled to secure a place in the squad.
Cricket analyst Sikander Bakht echoed these concerns, stating that the selectors have overlooked in-form players, which could hurt Pakistan’s chances in the tournament.
Pakistan’s Road to ICC Champions Trophy 2025
With Pakistan set to host the Champions Trophy from February 19, these selection debates could shape the team’s final strategy. While the squad boasts experienced players, the omission of certain key names and inclusion of underperforming players has raised eyebrows.
With Wasim Akram and other cricketing experts questioning the selection committee, will Pakistan make any adjustments before the tournament kicks off?
